The history of MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) began in 1981. In the center of the North Miami suburb, a Contemporary Art Center with one modest exhibition hall was opened. In 1995, its permanent collection was formed, and a year later the museum received a new building designed by Charles Gwarthmey. Nowadays, the museum offers its visitors a collection of paintings and installations by contemporary artists, numbering about 600 exhibits, reflecting significant artistic developments by well-known and emerging artists from the United States and other countries.
The MoCA is known for its innovative and even provocative exhibitions that demonstrate a new approach to the study and popularization of contemporary art. The exposition is equipped with the latest technology: sliding and rotating walls, screens, interactive exhibits. It is a pleasure to contemplate the masterpieces of contemporary masters and study the latest trends in fine art.

The museum hosts up to ten exhibitions annually, and visitors can take part in educational programs, forums and workshops, listen to lectures and even visit the city’s artists’ workshops and see private collections of artworks.
The annual Optic Nerve Film Festival, held at MOCA, is recognized as an important forum for emerging filmmakers. Since its inception in 2000, the festival has screened over 220 films, many of which were presented to the public for the first time.
On the last Friday of every month, the Museum hosts free Jazz at MOCA concerts.
