One of the oldest parks in Miami-Dade County, Matson Hammock Park is adjacent to Coral Gables from the south. It was opened back in 1930 and then had an area of 80 acres (32 hectares). The land for the park was donated by the famous industrialist William John Matheson, who wished it to be used “to preserve the natural beauty”. Later, Matheson’s heirs added another 630 acres of land to the park.
Today, Matson Hammock Park is a large green oasis and a popular vacation spot. It has a clean, shallow artificial lagoon that fills with fresh water at high tide. It is perfect for swimming and relaxing with children. There is a marina for yachts and boats, excellent conditions for professional and beginner surfers and kiteboarders. You can rent kayaks and boards for SUP-surfing (stand up paddle surfing).
Picnic areas are organized on the coast, and you can also enjoy a delicious meal in the cozy Red Fish Grill restaurant, sitting by the water’s edge.
Hiking and biking along the park’s paths and trails provide an opportunity to see shady mangroves and picturesque corners where iguanas, raccoons and other species of animals live.
Matheson Hammock is more than just a park, it’s a great place for active, healthy and safe leisure.
