The Whole Truth About the Cost of Childbirth in Miami

So, let’s get started….

So, you’ve heard some colorful stories from friends about their childbirth experiences in the U.S. and have decided to look into the topic yourself. The first question that comes to mind is: HOW MUCH DOES CHILDBIRTH COST IN THE U.S.? That’s a fair question.

Historically, childbirth in America was considered very expensive and accessible only to certain segments of the population. By the way, some people are still absolutely convinced of this. I can say unequivocally—it’s a MYTH. Don’t believe me? Okay. Let’s take it step by step.

Let’s imagine (if you aren’t already) that you’ve seen those two cherished lines, and of course, thoughts are already swirling in your head about how you’ll give birth. What will your first meeting with your little one be like? For some, thoughts immediately turn to strollers, cribs, and setting up the home—well, that’s a normal “nesting” instinct, common to practically all expectant moms and some dads too, I should note. Here, as a brief commercial break, I’d like to invite you to visit our page, where you’ll learn what TURNKEY CHILDBIRTH IN THE U.S. is—here.

So, we’ll break everything down in great detail to help you determine the amount you’ll need to budget for medical services related to your upcoming delivery and answer the question: how much does childbirth cost in the U.S.?

There’s a ton of all sorts of information about this online, much of which doesn’t actually match reality. The most common claims involve thousands of dollars and the conclusion that giving birth in America is a privilege reserved for millionaires. Absolute nonsense! You might ask, why am I so sure? Because I’ve been through it all myself and can confirm every word.

Let’s break down the costs you’ll need to cover for childbirth using the example of one hospital, such as Memorial Regional Hospital, located in the Hollywood area—a neighborhood where many housing options offer good value for money. I’ll write separately about housing, neighborhoods, and prices (by the way, you can check out rental prices here).

So, the hospital contract states:

1. Normal vaginal delivery – $3,500, with a stay of one to two days (or up to 48 hours). Each additional day costs an extra $1,000.

2. Cesarean section – $4,500, with a hospital stay of two to three days (or up to 96 hours). Each additional day is the same $1,000.

These amounts do not include the services of your doctor, who also serves as the obstetrician, or the services of a neonatologist, if needed. These services are required for a cesarean section and are very rarely needed for vaginal delivery.

Furthermore, these amounts do not include payment for anesthesia and a hearing test (the whole of America is obsessed with it). Also, the hospital service package does not include visits from a pediatrician, who comes to the hospital every day starting from the baby’s birth for checkups (I will definitely write about these separately). On average, a single pediatrician visit costs $150, plus minor hospital fees totaling no more than $300–350.

I will write about hospitals in great detail and separately, as this is also one of the key considerations when planning a birth in the U.S.

Now, more details on all these costs:

– Doctor’s services (also known as obstetrician).

A package for pregnancy and childbirth care starting at 32 weeks can cost an average of $2,800 to $5,500. Previously, the upper limit was much higher, as the legendary Dr. Semyon Zinker was still practicing, and his package of services—including childbirth, which he managed alongside the patient “from call to call” in the literal sense of the word—cost $7,000. Lately, the legendary Semyon Zinker has been thinking more and more about retirement—we wish him a wonderful rest—he’s earned it!

Frankly speaking, choosing a doctor is a very personal matter, and I’ll end my comments here. If you need my subjective opinion, I’ll be sure to share it, but only in a private conversation.

Now, in more detail, what exactly is included in the cost of the pregnancy and childbirth care package? For the most part, the packages don’t differ much, and below I’ll list the services included in the package and those for which an additional fee will be required:

The obstetric package includes:

1. Prenatal visits to the doctor’s office—once a week (the frequency may be increased if the patient’s physical condition requires it)

2. All necessary laboratory tests:

– blood type and Rh factor

– complete blood count

– panel of serological tests: hepatitis B, HIV, syphilis, rubella,

– urinalysis with sediment microscopy

– Group B Streptococcus (GBS) culture

– glucose tolerance test (1-hour)

3. Necessary number of ultrasounds, CTG

4. Fetal echocardiography at every visit

5. Management of the delivery process by a physician

6. Postpartum visits to the physician’s office – 2 times (the number may be increased if the patient’s physical condition requires it).

Services requiring additional payment:

1. Glucose tolerance test (3-hour) ———————————— $200

2. Postpartum Rh0(D) immunoglobulin injection —————— $200

3. Circumcision (performed on the 2nd day after the baby’s birth) —— $300

4. Tubal ligation (during childbirth) ———————————————— $800

5. Insertion of an intrauterine hormonal system (including an IUD) – starting at $1,000

6. Removal of the intrauterine hormonal system ———————— $150

Epidural anesthesia fee – $1250 – there is no difference between vaginal delivery and cesarean section. It is best to pay before delivery, i.e., make an advance payment, or, if you are not sure whether you will need this service but end up using it during delivery, pay before discharge from the hospital. In this case, you will not incur any additional charges.

Neonatologist services – on average $850. Memorial Regional Hospital is currently running a promotion where you prepay for epidural anesthesia—$1,250—and receive neonatologist services for just $160, which must also be prepaid along with the anesthesia.

This is an example of calculating the cost of childbirth at one of Miami’s best clinics—the best, in fact, because the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, America’s top children’s hospital, is located in the same complex as Memorial Regional Hospital. We’ll cover it separately, along with other clinics and birthing centers. More to come…
