The Fruit and Spice Park is the only tropical botanical garden of its kind in the United States. It was founded in 1944 on the territory of the agricultural community of Redland, whose name refers to the reddish tint of the soil in this area. The idea of organizing such a botanical garden belonged to Mary Calkins Heinlein, a descendant of the first settlers in Florida. This woman gave many years of her life and efforts to her brainchild, and her name is present in the official name of the park.
Fruit & Spice Park is located just 22 km from Miami and is open to visitors all year round. More than 500 species of native and imported tropical fruit trees, vegetables, and spices grow on the 15-hectare area: 40 varieties of bananas, 180 varieties of mangoes, 70 types of bamboo, 15 varieties of breadfruit and a wide variety of other exotic plants. You can walk around the territory, pick and taste fallen fruits, but you are not allowed to pick them from the trees.
Since not all visitors are well versed in tropical fruits, there are tram tours of the park, during which a guide tells about the characteristics of different plant species and interesting stories related to them. For safety reasons, poisonous plants are separated by fences. The souvenir shop has fruit samples and useful information about them, and you can also buy jellies, purees, jams, juices, and other products made from the garden harvest.
But this park can also be considered an open-air museum: a 1906 school building and a 1913 building have been preserved on its territory, and later a typical house of the first settlements in Florida built in 1902 was moved there.
Unfortunately, during Hurricane Andrew in 1992, the park was severely damaged. A lot of work was done to restore it, and even to reconstruct historical buildings. Today, the old school building is home to the Mango Cafe, and the Fruit and Spice Park receives more and more visitors every year.
